About Medela Breast Pumps & 2-Phase Expression™.

Extensive research on electric breastpumps initiated by Medela and conducted by Professor Peter Edwin Hartmann and his team lead to the development of the 2-Phase Expression technology.

It is known that babies change the way they suckle at a mother’s breast during breastfeeding. Initially they suckle rapidly to stimulate the milk ejection reflex (MER) and induce milk “let-down”. This phase is referred to as “stimulation”. Once the breast has been sufficiently stimulated, milk begins flowing and the baby settles into a slower, more relaxed sucking for the actual feeding phase. This phase is called “expression”.A patent new system as used in the manual ‘Harmony’ and top of the range ‘Symphony’ breast pumps.

These two phases are combined in 2-Phase Expression – an exclusive pumping program that more closely mimics a baby’s nursing rhythm by pumping in two distinct modes. It consists of a Stimulation mode and an Expression mode – just like real breastfeeding.

All Medela breastpumps are fully automatic. They function with the same physiological Mothers little helper – the Medela Mini-Electric rhythm as a nursing baby. This stimulates milk production. Suction strength can be regulated within a safe range to ensure that the breastmilk can be pumped gently yet effectively.

Mother’s little helper

Medela breastpumps are ideal for use in clinics, at home, when travelling or in the workplace, e.g. in the case of under or oversupply of milk, engorgement, sensitive or sore nipples, when a baby has sucking problems, relactation after a pause in breastfeeding or for the temporary separation of mother and child.

Note:

You will not find regular teats/baby bottles OR soothers listed in the product selection. Mothers wishing to bottle feed their breast milk should use the Medela Haberman feeder or Softcup feeder, these are ideal for use on those occasions when baby is spending time with relatives or carers to enable them to feed Baby your breast milk without teat/nipple confusion, also for feeding baby when breast feeding is not possible or if Baby has a minor deformity such as a cleft pallet.

Tara Says…

I have no doubt that the Mother & Baby products I have chosen to supply here represent the best available, But…

Please seek advice form your midwife or other health care professional before using breast-feeding items or other equipment if you are not sure it is right for you and your baby.

If you are struggling to produce enough breast milk to satisfy baby or are having problems with baby falling asleep at your breast, etc, please do consult with you health care professional, there are answers to almost every problem, don’t despair – you are not alone!

Good News…

We strongly believe that breastfeeding gives Baby and Mother real health benefits that can never be equalled when using synthetic milk formulas.

It is also widely thought that if at least several months of breast feeding can be attained, this will bring the breasts to full maturity and help lower the possibility of breast cancer in later life.
