Medela SpecialNeeds Feeders™

Specially developed silicone teat for babies with serious nursing difficulties, particularly for children with cleft lip/palate. A valve in the teat allows the milk to flow slowly and evenly and prevents the baby from swallowing air. Milk quantity and flow can be easily regulated.

In cases where babies have severe feeding problems, such as with Down Syndrome, cleft lip/palate, neurological dysfunction, sucking symptoms and others, the Haberman Feeder offers an alternative to spoons, enlarged and/or extra holes in the nipple, and nasogastric tubes. The Haberman Feeder is so effective and easy to use that it can actually change feeding sessions from a difficult or even traumatic experience into a pleasurable activity for the mother and baby. A specially designed valve and teat adjust milk flow to suit baby’s needs.

· A one-way valve prevents flooding and overwhelming the baby.

· If the baby cannot nurse at all, or just needs a little help, the bottle can be squeezed to release a limited volume of milk.

No lid / cover is available for this product.

Tara says…

Probably the finest baby feeder for mothers and relatives wanting to give Baby mothers milk – allows the user more control over the flow which helps Baby to be more comfortable after feeds.

SoftCup™ Advanced Cup Feeder

Makes feeding easier in the case of suction difficulties. Excellent alternative to cup feeding. The soft, spoon-shaped mouthpiece is gentle to the baby’s lips and prevents milk spillage.

· The mouthpiece refills automatically.

· No nipple confusion.

Medela’s SoftFeeder is a specialty-feeding device for infants, designed for use when health care professionals recommend cup feeding. Among babies who have breastfeeding difficulties, cups have been shown to improve the chances for subsequent successful breastfeeding. The SoftFeeder allows the baby to be fed without developing nipple confusion or preference until the transition to breastfeeding can be made. Unlike a regular cup, the Medela SoftCup Feeder has a control valve and self-refilling reservoir, which help maintain a steady supply of just the right amount of breast milk at the lip of the cup. Made of soft, pliable pure silicone, the feeder is contoured to fit even the smallest mouth.

Supplemental Nursing System (SNS™)

Particularly well-suited to provide babies with breastmilk or supplement at the breast, e.g. for premature babies, babies with sucking difficulties, adopted babies, children with cleft lip/palate or for stimulating milk production in a natural way after a break in breastfeeding and to get the baby used to breastfeeding again.

The SNS was originally designed to help adoptive mothers breastfeed. When a baby sucks on the mother’s breast for a period of days or weeks, a hormonal mechanism is triggered that causes milk to be produced. This is known as induced lactation.

The SNS works using a special bottle hung around the mother’s neck. Two tubes are taped to her breasts so that the ends reach her nipples.

· The micro bore silicone tubes are very small and soft and go unnoticed by baby.

Tara says…

This must be one of the most innovative products ever to help overcome feeding difficulties when mother is having problems providing breast milk a plenty, and is a sensational product for adopted infants where the mother and baby bond can be reinforced greatly.

Should be used under the guidance of a health care professional.

Picture Copyright MedelaWhen baby takes the nipple and areola into his or her mouth, he/she also takes the tube.

Breastfeeding proceeds normally, maintaining the stimulation to maintain lactation and the Picture copyright Medelaintimacy between mother and baby, as well as providing baby with important supplement from the SNS.

As can be seen in the picture below this product can enable mum to breast feed even when her own milk has not come through properly or parhaps not at all. By feeding in this way the production of ones own milk is greatly encouraged.
